TEAK CARE

Teak has special qualities that make it ideal for outdoor use. The natural oil present within teak prevents water from seeping into the wood. It requires very little care or maintenance to last decades.

Over time if not treated, teak greys off to a lovely silver-grey patina.

Allowing your teak to naturally age does not compromise the structural integrity of the timber at all. However, you may prefer it if the teak retains its beautiful honey colour.

Preserving the colour

It’s best to apply a teak sealer to retain the honey colour. Osmo Clear UV Protection Oil is a good natural sealer which we recommend. You can find it here.

Teak sealers need to be re-applied at least once a year, ideally twice.

Lacquered teak

Some of our teak items are sprayed with a black lacquer finish. To protect the finish, we recommend keeping lacquered teak under cover. Kinnell & Posch supplies waterproof, fitted, custom made covers for all its furniture items. Please get in touch to discuss cover options and pricing.

Cleaning natural teak

Wipe up spilled liquids immediately with soapy water using a damp cloth. Some liquids such as coffee and red wine might get into the wood. Contact us for advice on how best to remove light and deeper stains.

To perform a deeper clean following the winter months, remove all cushions, hose down your furniture so it is wet and mix Simple Green® All Purpose cleaner in a warm bucket of water. Take a soft, non-metallic brush and gently scrub the surface of the wood in the same direction as the grain. You should not apply much force. Afterwards, use a garden hose to rinse off the teak furniture with water. Don’t use high water pressure as that can damage the wood.

In the winter months we recommend to shelter or cover your outdoor teak furniture.

Hot objects must never be placed directly on table tops.

Check fastening bolts are secure at least once a year.

NUTURAL FIBRE RATTAN

Natural rattan, like teak, greys off to a lovely silver-grey patina.

Preserving the colour

If you prefer to preserve the golden honey colour of natural rattan, wipe your furniture with linseed oil at least twice a year, especially if your outdoor furniture is exposed to excessive amounts of sunlight and rain.

CUSHIONS - SQUABS & BACK RESTS

Foam care

All our cushioning systems are manufactured out of Quick Dry Foam.

Quick Dry Foam unlike normal foam has large open pores which permit maximum air circulation to allow quick dry time.

If your squabs get saturated, stand them up with their zips facing down to allow for excess water to quickly drain from the foam. Doing this also allows the wood and the underside of the squabs to fully dry out which prevents mildew.

Fabric care

All our cushions are covered using Sunbrella® fabric which is engineered to combine the highest level of design, performance and water resistance. For easy day-to-day maintenance of your Sunbrella® fabric:

  1. Brush off loose dirt.
  2. Spray on soapy water.
  3. Allow water to soak into the fabric.
  4. Lightly scrub with a soft brush.
  5. Rinse thoroughly until all soap residue is removed.
  6. Air dry.

White fabric care

Our white fabric colour option is the most unforgiving. However if your white fabric does get stained there is an easy way to get it looking as good as new. To remove stains from white fabric:
  1. Prepare a solution of 1 cup bleach and 1/4 cup of mild soap per 4 litres of clean water.
  2. Remove covers and soak in solution for 30 minutes.
  3. Cold water machine wash.
  4. Air dry.
  5. Repeat from the top for very stubborn stains.
Re-waterproofing fabric

Apply 303 Fabric Guard® to all Sunbrella® fabrics after each thorough cleaning, which typically removes the original finish and reduces the fabric’s water repellency.
  1. Apply 303 Fabric Guard® in a well ventilated area following instructions on the container.
  2. Apply in a thin, even coat and allow fabric to dry completely.
  3. Apply a second thin, even coating (Two light coatings are more effective in restoring fabric water resistance than a single heavy coating).
